Best thesis of the Tallinn University of Applied Sciences (TTK) this year is “Comparison of Different Filter Materials Used in Drinking Water Production Based on the Example of Viimsi Veevärk” by Environmental Technology and Management student Mirle Lembinen, which outlines the best solution for improving the quality of drinking water of the residents of Viimsi.

Erki Lember, Environmental Technology lecturer, who is the supervisor of the thesis in TTK, says that Viimsi’s groundwater needs processing before drinking because of its excessive amount of iron, manganese, and radionuclides. The author of the thesis analysed different filter materials, technological regimes and solutions by using a pilot device and found their best combination for removing studied compounds.

Lember added that the analysis is thorough and relies on international scientific papers and carried out pilot tests. The results will be used for Viimsi water supply filters in the future and the thesis will therefore help provide the residents of Viimsi high quality drinking water, says Lember.
